Christmas Cracker Pursuit Race 2009
Only 12 boats ventured out in the freezing conditions for the annual Christmas Cracker pursuit race. It took the competitors as long to take the frozen covers off their boats and rig with frozen sheets as it did to actually race. It was well worth the effort though, as there was a good breeze albeit a bit gusty. The wind was westerly about 14knots and a sausage triangle course was set by the OOD using buoys YP,5P,XS,3S,4S and with the committee boat over by the far shore. Stuart Backhouse in his Contender was one of the last classes to start and he made steady progress through the fleet to gain a comfortable first place by the end of the race. He was followed by the even later starting 505, crewed by Neil Rabbits and Adam Kenney who ran out of time whilst catching Stuart. Colin Butler and Robin Smedley came 3rd in a Flying Fifteen. Afterwards the sailors and the spectators (who had more sense than to venture out on such a cold day) warmed up with Mince pies and mulled wine and raised a fair sum for the RNLI in the process. Merry Christmas! full results

About the club

Burton Sailing Club (BSC) has been in existence for over 100 years (founded 1902). Initially based on the river in Burton-on-Trent but now enjoys the excellent sailing facilities at Foremark Reservoir admist the dramatic Derbyshire countryside, in the heart of the National Forest.. The club is situated within easy reach of Derby, Nottingham, Burton, Leicester and Loughborough. The reservoir covers 230 acres and is easily the best stretch of water available in the area for sailing. The club has membership of approximately 200 which includes ordinary, junior, family membership as well as group membership with several local colleges/universities.

Facilities

The club has exclusive use of a clubhouse which includes a fully fitted kitchen, changing rooms with showers, bar and wet and dry lounge areas. The clubhouse has excellent views over the reservoir both inside and on the adjacent patio area. So whilst not sailing you can spectate in comfort, or merely just soak up the beauty of the surroundings. There is also a childrens' play area alongside clubhouse.

There is a large sheltered dinghy park with berths for approx 400 boats. The park is on a slight gradient leading down to a wide concrete slipway that extends well into the reservoir making launching easy. There is also a long pontoon for mooring.

Training

The club owns several boats that are used for training and general hire to club members. It runs regular sailing training for beginners, intermediates as well as training on support activities i.e. safety boat handling and race management etc. The beginners courses usually run in the spring and early summer, The club is an official RYA training centre.

Racing

There is regular racing on Sundays and on Wednesday evenings. The Sunday racing runs from February to December and the Wednesday racing from April to September. The club holds annual open events in most of the classes of dinghy sailed at the club. Last year this included Laser, Contender, Flying Fifteen, 505. The club often hosts inland championships for various fleets from time to time. Junior club members actively participate in Derbyshire Youth Sailing (DYS) events. The majority of the club racing is handicap based with a single start for all dinghies. In addition class results are extracted out of these for the more popular classes at the club.

Social

There is a schedule of varied non-sailing social events to cater for all members, juniors and seniors. There are also, "fun" sailing events of various types throughout the summer.
