Update from the Youth Fleet Captain

Hi all, Just thought I’d write an update on the youth fleet so far this year!!! So far, we have had quite a busy year with DYS events and also LEVEL 1 and 2 coaching. DYS, so far we have had 4 events this year, Toddbrook, Combs, Ogston and Carsington. We should have done 5 events but the first event at Trent Valley was cancelled due to lack of wind. Toddbrook DYS was first and was a very pleasant event, fair winds and fine weather made for a great event. 3 Burton sailors attended the event myself, Lizzie Jones and Sam Ford. 22 boats attended the event with Sam finishing 16th overall, Lizzie in 7th and myself in 4th. The second event of the series was Combs and what an event that was! A brisk breeze blew throughout the day giving some very challenging conditions. About 15 boats started the first race, but only 5 of the boats completed enough races to qualify. The racing was extremely tight at combs with the top 3 boats (Myself, Ben Crossdale and Alistair Pears) all being on equal points going into the last race. Unfortunately I made a few silly mistakes; bent my top section and death rolled a couple of times so lost the race finishing 3rd overall. Ogston next and what a contrast to the other 2 events! With the reservoir looking like a milk pond when we arrived mixed with 20+ degrees temperatures it was a beautiful day but not for sailing! However, we did complete all 3 races in very testing conditions. Myself and Sam attended this event, with Sam spending most of the time in the top half of the Topper fleet he did very well finishing around 19th overall out of 30+ entries. I finished 3rd overall managing to post a 1st place in the second race. The latest event both myself and Sam have attended was DYS Carsington. This event was held in very changeable and shifty conditions. The first race was sailed in a shifty 5 knot breeze with Sam very impressively rounding the windward mark as first Topper. He eventually finished the race as 4th topper but due to the wind dropping straight after the Lasers finishing didn’t fair too well in the main fleet but neither did any other Toppers!!! The second race began again in a shifty 5 knot breeze, but then out of the blue a huge squall came through bringing with it perfect sailing winds but very limited visibility and also VERY wet! This soon blew through and again, straight after the Lasers finished the wind dropped off again which didn’t fair very well with the other boats. Sam finished a credible 19th place overall and I finished 4th. In total there were 31 boats at Carsington.

Also, Richard Nurse and I have been busy coaching 3 new junior members on the Level 1 and 2 course. On the current second course we have 7 juniors on the course so fingers crossed they all enjoy it and choose to join our fleet!!!

Finally, if anybody would like to attend a DYS event but have no boat remember we do have the club boats for hire and me and my Dad would be able to transport the boat to and from the event on my double trailer. DYS also have an Optimist and a nearly brand new topper on a lease scheme. See my Dad for further information.

Happy sailing to all of you and don’t forget about the week in summer (Monday 6th to Friday 11th August) where there will be instruction and safety cover down every day so get your parents down as well!!!
