Update from the Youth Fleet Captain (Summer 2008)

Hi all,
Starting with the end of last year, Burton had a successful year in the DYS series with Sam Ford finishing 10th overall and myself winning the series. With 2007 being Sam’s first competitive year it was a fantastic achievement. Back to this year, Sam again has been out on the DYS circuit making his mark gaining quite a few good results and he is definitely on par for another top 10 finish overall, so good luck Sam. I have only been to 2 DYS events this year due to other commitments on weekends so Sam is the only current Burton sailor representing the club, there are only 3 DYS events left this year which are Staunton Harold, Burton and Swarkestone so lets try get a good Burton representation at these 3 events as they aren’t far to travel. I believe Eric is planning on competing at the last 3 DYS events due to meeting new people at the NSSA, so who will be there from Burton to challenge him?!? Just for reference, the Burton DYS event is on the 20th September so no excuses for anybody not knowing when it is! Also, this years NSSA regatta was held at Carsington over the week 21st-25th July. We had 3 Burton boats at this event, Eric Robinson sailed a topper in the rookie fleet, Sam Ford sailed in the topper fleet, and I sailed a RS200 in the Fast Handicap fleet. All 3 of us did really well with both Eric and Sam finishing mid fleet and I finished 5th in the fast handicap fleet also winning the trophy for first RS200. I think I speak on behalf of all 3 of us about how much fun the event was especially with the event being right on our doorstep!!! It is also a great opportunity to meet new friends from around the country. Next years event is at Bridlington on the East coast which I hear is a fantastic place to sail as well as having long sandy beaches and of course, a week at the seaside. Hopefully we can get a few more Burton sailors to the event next year. This years Junior Championships are again being held over the Beach Bum weekend on the 31st August. It would be great to get all our juniors out on the water for this event including those who have just finished training courses as there will be prizes throughout the fleet!!! I won’t be able to compete at this year’s junior championship as I will be sunning myself in Majorca so good luck to everyone and I’ll make sure the trophy is back!!! Finally, enjoy the rest of your summer holidays, sail lots and I’m sure I’ll see you all at the club and DYS events.
