Novice Series Reports |
Well g'day to you all, 2010 is upon us, well advanced and already we have had the Novice Championship before you know, it will be summer and oh what a summer this will be, with an action packed sailing calendar, socials and BBQ's galore and the chance of some pretty competitive (or relaxing) sailing at all levels.
Early in the year I attended the AGM which was interesting in that the club has had a successful last year and has great aspirations for this year; if you're sitting there thinking do I really want to enrol? Will I enjoy it again? Then just say YES. You will be part of a vibrant, growing group of people whose greatest asset is their love of the sport and willingness to share their knowledge unreservedly to young and old alike.
With this in mind don't forget the junior/ novice series, its specially set up to give people ongoing support beyond the initial training course, it's a stepper series to help improve your confidence, give you new skills, help you become familiar with the workings of the club and a bonus is that it will also ease you into Sunday sailing with the regulars.
The format for the sailing is very simple, turn up on the Saturday morning for 10:00, rig launch and sail, and then a talk at lunch time on the topic of the day followed by 3 simple races in the afternoon or if you prefer you can continue to just sail around. We tend to use the big committee boat so if anyone isn't sure or if they want to bring someone to watch then there's room enough. Simple, isn't it?
As far as I know no other club has a Saturday series as organised with committed safety cover and support. Whilst on this it's appropriate to say THANK YOU to the people who did the organisation last year and to the members who came down to run the series and briefings. To keep things tickety boo I aim to have a rolling support, so I will approach people who benefitted last year to help to run this years series. You can have a go at being an OOD, nope not the type with the yellow eyes and brain in a ball like on Dr Who (though the brain in a ball bit might be close to the truth) rather Officer of the day and in charge of the racing, It'll be great!!
Last thing to mention is for the kids, there were lots down on the course last year and I know that Eric and Tom are desperate for some company, well its coming; Sunday is going to be kid's adventure action day. Alex, with the help of Chloe is planning some fun games and messing about on and most (likely in) the water. That way you can leave the boring stuff to the adults. Watch out for his info coming out soon, its most likely to be some wangle fangle electronic blip format though!!
